How Punk are You?

Well, if you go by the dictionary, "punk" is either decayed wood or a "hoodlum." But we're not going to quiz you based on that, because we don't really buy those definitions. Of course… you might not buy our definition of what punk is. But you could always take the quiz, see what result you get, and then let us know if you think we're way off-base.

Take the quiz: http://www.the-n.com/games/quiz_main.php?ipv_sectionID=43&ipv_quizID=272 and see, here’s what they said about me:
You're so punk. And see, we guessed that without having any idea of what your hair looks like or what kind of music you're personally into. For all we know, you might be a total hippie, president of the chess club, a punk, or all three. The truth is that you think for yourself and stand up for what you believe in, and that's so very punk rock. You could apply that trait to whatever you want, from fixing cars to singing opera, and you'd still be punk. In fact, please do! We'd love to see what happens.

Quit your Job and Get a Life!

Life is to short to work for the man.. Quit yer job, my friend, do it now!! Move to a shack if you have too, squat if ya want, just quit your job and follow your dreams, not the dreams of your parents, friends or anyone elses for that matter. Travel, work for yourself, you'll come into some money some how..have faith in yourself, I'm finding that you " get what you need" if you just keep on going and do what you love to do.. be it music, art, building stuff, whatever it is, it doesn't matter, .I'm not saying to be a lazy fat slob or anything, I'm just saying do it on your own, work hard at it and it will fall into place..take it from me..i'm doing in and i have two kids to feed and..oh yeah, one more on the way.. :)

Corporate Punks

I started making baby punk clothing when I was pregnant with my son, Killian 7 years ago. I did it so I could work from home and spend time with him and also so he could wear some cute punk clothes. Being a punk rock girl most of my life I loved Punk Clothes and I was scared to death of all the gap / mainstream baby clothing out there. I definitely wasn’t going to put my lil’ punk rocker in a yellow teddy bear t-shirt, the whole idea scared the hell out of me! What was a hip young mom to do? I looked all over the place, online in malls and even on South Street in Philly, but nobody made cool baby or kids punk rock clothing. I wanted a kids misfits t-shirt, baby chuck taylors, little wifebeaters, or kids bondage pants. Sorry, they just did’t exist! So, instead of settling for mint green jumpers, i started making the stuff myself. A girl I was friends with at the time was also in the same boat as me and so we started Sourpuss Clothing. It was supposed to be kids and baby punk wear only, but it grew really quickly, soon we were carrying girls punk clothing, guys band t-shirts, punk clothing and accessories made by other manufacturers, and we sold our own line of wholesale punk clothing. And to make a very very long story short it became a nightmare! I turned into the enemy, I turned into everything I ever hated, I became a corporate punk rock asshole. I was working round the clock to supply the world with lil skull t-shirts! It was crazy! Towards the end both of my kids were with babysitters full time and mommy was never home! It didn’t seem to bother my business partner who always seemed to care more about herself than her kids anyhow, but I couldnt take it, so I got out. And I started Too Fast Clothing, now I have the best of both worlds, my kids and cool clothes, maybe not quite as many, but man, it is worth every minute of it. All I can say is beware of Corporate Sluts, dressed in punk rockers clothes.

I'm a hater... get used to it

Roller Derby is gayer than A.I.D.’s, sorry folks. I just really can't stand the shit. This whole craze is turning into something like the Pet Rock Fad was to 10 year old girls in the 70's, but Roller Derby is for fucking tattooed punk rock 20 something hipsters. The whole thing is pretty sorry if you ask me. First off, when the hell did punk rockers start following trends? Ugg..i guess they always did, huh? But why? Why the need to have the taller mohawk? Why is it the more Tattoos you have the cooler you are? Why are you guys all wearing gay lil roller skates and beating the hell out of each other? What gives? It's funny, I suppose punk rockers are just like everybody else, they just want to fit in with the crowd, be a bunch of scene queens and have the most punk rock buddies per capita. Whatever, I guess I’m just old fashioned, I wish punk was still a threat, not a cute lil hobby you see on the discovery channels reality shows. Good god people.

Old Crow Medicine Show

So, if you don't know about this band, The Old Crow Medicine Show, you should definitely look into them. These guys are absolutely fantastic. They are one of the best newer "old time" bands. They look like your typical rockabilly band, greased hair tattoos, cuffed blue jeans, and I believe their roots are in punk rock/rockabilly, but their music style kicks more ass than punk rock ever could. Ok so they got an upright bass player, acoustic guitar, fiddle, and dueling banjos. You may have heard their cover (well co-written, I believe) of Bob Dylan's "Wagon Wheel" on XPN or on college radio anywhere. This is by far their most popular song; off they're self titled album, "O.C.M.S." But this morning I was listening to their album, "Troubles Up and Down the Road" and if you get a chance you should check it out and listen to the song, “Little Sadie", it's an eerie fuckin' song about murder. Alot of their stuff as with alot of old time music bands are just remakes of old traditionals. Anyway, they are more than worth your time to check out..Heres tour dates and what not and a link to their site:

Thoughts on North Korea's nuclear test

Hmmm. Seems to me the USA is the last country to be dictating who should and who should not have the bomb. Seems to me the only country in history to ever use the bomb against people was guess who? --- The USA!

Seems to me that the USA telling other countries not to have the bomb is kind of like the smoker who tells others not to smoke ....

The USA needs to chill out in the machismo department and have direct talks with North Korea like they have been asking rather than further alienating them and allowing the issue to escalate. Has anyone figured out yet that the Bush regime's cowboy tactics just don't work???

Imposing even more sanctions on already impoverished nation is genocide. The North Korean leadership simply does not care about the welfare of its people, therefore more sanctions simply aren’t going to work.

The only way to deal with this issue is to have direct talks with the North Koreans and ensure them we are not going to try to topple their government like we have done to Iraq and are considering doing to Iran.

This will certainly create instability throughout the entire Asian region and we now have 8 countries that have successfully tested a nuclear weapon.

Scary times indeed.

Skinheads Movies and why Skinheads Suck!!

Just saw a trailer last night for an independent movie about skinheads called "Pariah." Now, as you may know or not know, I really hate skinheads, racist or not. I think the whole scene is completely retarded. Why do they keep making movies about these people? It's annoying, they shouldn't even be given the respect of the Medias negative attention, it gives them too much credit for being a bunch of assholes. What ever happened to good old fashioned punk rock movies..Sid and Nancy, Suburbia, SLC PUNK, Repo Man, The Decline of Western Civilization to name a few. Now you see..American History X, Romper Stomper, The Believer..Anyhow, even though I can't give these people credit for even being human beings, at least the media gives them credit for being what they are a bunch of simple minded, status seeking, socially inept knuckleheads. Its a shame that punk rockers have been associated with them for so long...

Plot Summary for Pariah (1998):
An inter-racial couple is attacked and the woman is gang-raped in a random attack. This prompts the woman to commit suicide and the man (Damon Jones) decides to seek revenge from the inside by joining the gang. However, once inside he learns of the reasons (poverty, social rejection) for their existence and starts developing a kinship until he is asked to kill someone to prove his loyalty.

Definition of Pariah: originally the name of the Pariah caste in India, has gained widespread use as an analogy, especially in the phrase social pariah, as a term for anyone considered an outcast or noticeably different by others.

What the fuck is wrong with you? How can you say something that you have no fucking knowledge of?? Let me guess, your some fucking dumbass punk rocker who only stands for squatters rights? Do even know what skin heads are about? It's all about working class and earning your living. It's the one sub culture that has nothing to do with the way you dress or who you hang out with. I'm not a skin head myself, but I know enough to have the utmost respect for those guys because their fucking real, unlike fucking punk rockers like you who can only think about their clothes and shit. Fuck you!

The Punk Rock Scene and why it sucks...

I was about 12 when I realized I didn’t want to belong to the mainstream. I truly believed that I saw them for what they were: materialistic, self serving, social slaves. Looking back I’m surprised this came to me at such an early age, but whatever, it did, I knew they were wrong. I thought there had to be something better out there, a place where people were just cool, not trying to hard. A place where you could be a free thinker, where we weren’t completely consumed by things, where we didn’t have to try and climb the social ladder or just look out for number one, where we cared about the greater good of humanity and changing the fucked up world we lived in. So I turned to punk rock. I had heard the Circle Jerks “Group Sex” and the Violent Femmes, “Blister in the Sun”, which for a short period became my theme song, telling everyone to just piss off into the air... Anyhow, after making the decision to not be a part of the society of snotty little brats I was being exposed to on a regular basis, I promptly came home from school and shaved my head, cut up my t-shirts, added some combat boots to my wardrobe and wa-la: Instant punk.

Now, what took me quite a bit longer to realize was that the punk scene wasn’t any better, in fact, maybe it was worse! It started out ok I guess but I quickly realized that they were just like the rest of them. For example,I remember going into “Zipperhead” a local punk store, which was an institution on South Street in Philadelphia. I was 13 years old, and yeah maybe I didn’t look as punk as the kids working there, who, mind you, seamed like Gods to me at the time. They were I’m guessing anywhere in age from 16-22. So to me they were the coolest, you know.,whatever, I was young! Anyway, man did they treat me like shit. Their Punk Rock elitism was insane. Like “Oh, you don’t know who Vice Squad is? What’s wrong with you?” Well, for fucks sake. I wasn’t born with a Mohawk. Yeah ,they were mean, snobby,& everything I hated in the world and they were my idols.

I went into a state of denial. I just tried harder to be punker than the next guy. As embarrassing as this is to admit I studied punk rock books, learned lyrics, dyed my hair blue, I did whatever it took to be punk. So this went on and on. It seems insane now and I don’t think I ever realized what I was doing, but I guess I was trying to keep up with the Jones ya know? So, now that I’m a lil older I have come to see the err of my ways. Now what I think is Punk Rock is completely different than most and ya know what i think about the scene..i think it sucks, everyone trying to be hipper, more troubled more down trodden than the next guy. The kids in the scene are just as bad as any other group in the world, criticizing each other, shunning one another, all doing the same thing. Have you noticed the roller derby craze that has swept the scene recently?? Everyone’s got tons of tattoos, now they are just as trendy as Z Cavaricci’s were back in the day. It’s frightening really.. So all I can say, in conclusion, is fuck em all. They are no better than you, do what ya want and think what ya want and don’t forget where you came from..find that place, go back to it and never ever leave..

To Punk or Not to Punk

PUNK:
· Giving the band “Crass” the finger at a Crass reunion show..how gay for them..
· Having “ANTISOCIAL” tattooed across your forehead
· Fighting and thereby hospitalizing your friend on Tuesday night, hanging out and laughing about the whole thing Wednesday afternoon.
· Sneaking out to see the show at thirteen and not coming home for three more days..if ever.
· Hopping the first train out of there.
· Renting a U-Haul, driving it across country and, obviously, never returning it.
· Starting a zine, running one issue..pretty standard punk rock.
· GG Allin and Iggy Pop
· Being Gay..that’s punk
· Buying a piece of land somewhere in the middle of nowhere, and living off it.
· Not sending your kids to public school, come on people, isn’t that what we hated..
· Being an Artist, musician or whatever the fuck you feel and not workin’ for the man..Soo punk I can barely stand it.

NOT PUNK:
· Yuppie business fucks dressed up as Punk Rockers, I know too many.
· Hot topic, Wal-mart, a few other clothing company’s I know to well.
· Skinheads..rascist or not, it’s just bizarre really. Go Away..
· Being a homophobe
· Not knowing who Motorhead is and then wearing a back patch on your denim jacket the next week.
· Wearing a back patch on your denim jacket.
· Blink 182..although I must say, they do have a few catchy songs, not punk though..
· Growing up Punk and then buying a house in the suburbs..just like Mom and Dad..sorry, doesn’t qualify as punk to me.

WARNING: These are just the opinions of one middle aged punk rocker. They do not represent the views of all, although they should!!

Punks not dead!! It’s just farther underground then most folks can imagine..

Let us know what you think!
